Every year, the Cameron Champ Foundation hosts the premier tournament for junior golfers from diverse backgrounds in Houston, and every year, Sacramento-area junior golfers make the 1,600-mile trip to compete in the event.
This year, two girls and seven boys were in the field for the fourth annual Mack Champ Invitational. Alaythia Hinds, a senior from Rancho Murieta, and Sakura Watanabe, a ninth-grader from Roseville, played in the girls event, which was held April 11-13 at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, TX. Hinds won the event in 2023.
The boys event was May 2-5 at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston. Sacramento-area players in the field were high school juniors Jayden Lizama from Elk Grove, Aidan Sweeney from Granite Bay, and Cruz Medrano from Citrus Heights; sophomore Micah Lenton from Hercules; fifth-grader Raiden Orille from Elk Grove; and brothers Obasi (seventh grade) and Zafir Winn (fifth grade) from Sacramento.
